Working with newly installed Leopard – loves and dislikes

by Angela on October 26, 2007

I installed Mac OS X Leopard yesterday. The install went smoothly; I simply followed the defaults.

Here are my loves and dislikes of using Leopard, after some eight hours working with Mac’s new OS.

The things I love:

* Leopard is faster on my year-old iMac than Tiger;

* No down time at all – I just kept on working after the two hour install. Comparing Leopard with major OS changes in Windows, where it took hours to get to the stage where you could get back to work, this is amazing;

* Time Machine – very fast.

The things I dislike:

* Time Machine – it’s completely automatic, so you have no idea what it’s doing while it’s doing it. While this is fine, it also means that it’s frustrating, because you can’t set it to do its thing at a specific time. I’ve got a NOISY external drive, and don’t want it humming away all day;

* Lack of documentation – I looked for more information on Time Machine and Spaces, and couldn’t find it, so I’m discovering things via trial and error, which is not the way I like to work.

* Spaces. Very basic. I expected more options.

On balance, I’m pleased I upgraded. I love Leopard more than I dislike it.
